I was talking to one of the people who was involved in writing Florida's current dangerous dog law. It was passed in the context of some very horrible dog mauling deaths. Alice Broom was killed outside her home by six pit bulls shocking Ocala and the entire State. Animal control had been out several times but lacked the legal authority to take action. The terrible facts surrounding the case can be read in the legal opinion upholding the owner's conviction, here. The owner, Robert Freeman, eventually was sentenced to twelve and one half years in prison.
The person I talked to said that she never envisioned that one kill of a domestic animal would result in a dog's euthanasia such as in Broward County. The intent was that the dangerous dog definition would be state wide. Unfortunately, there is probably nothing in the legislative history in writing or debate that proves this.
We need to change Florida's dangerous dog law. The only way to do so is to show the legislators that it is a matter of great public interest to Floridians. Today, I am starting a Facebook page entitled "Change Florida's Dangerous Dog Law." I am asking that we get as many fans to join this page as possible.
I will be approaching people who I feel will be able to lobby for a change in Florida's Dangerous Dog Law, and will shortly post a proposal for change to include my thoughts, as well as those shared on the Facebook page. If we can get thousands of people to join, we will be better able to lobby our efforts.
For all those out there who have had problems, unfairness and injustice, share your stories on the page and your thoughts on how it should be changed.
